HOUSEBREAKING:

We all know that 7-8 wk old puppies have SMALL bladders. Which means, we have to take them outside frequently to use potty. Everytime your puppy wakes up, eats, drinks and plays..they will want to pee afterwards. Look at your new puppy as a newborn baby!

Alot of new puppy owners do not realize how often they need to take thier puppy out to use the bathroom. It is very IMPORTANT, if you have a female puppy, to take her out to pee often, she can and will get bladder infections if you don't.

We all know, as soon as we sit down and relax in the evenings...that your puppy will get up and start running around.

I USE a metal can (coffee), put some rocks or pennies in it, and keep it with me at all times(till puppy is housebroken).  When I see my puppy sniffing in circles or squatting I SHAKE the can!!  This startles the puppy and I have enough time to get up and get the puppy outside to do his/her business.

This also works for EVERYTHING ! It works for jumping up, chewing, biting hard in play or anything else you don't want your puppy to do. Make sure you use a 1 WORD command when you shake the can. NO works great!

I suggest that you do not use puppy training pads or water bottles to help housebreak your puppy. Water bottles scare puppies and it teaches them to not like water.  Training pads may work fine, but it also trains your puppy to pee on them instead of going to the door and wanting out to use the bathroom.

O.K.

Here is some really good links to help in housebreaking and training your puppy/dog.

SITSTAYFETCH is really good! It also has a forum where you can become a member and talk with other golden retriever families. But if your not into that..all the e-books are great and all have differant training techniques and idea's.
